True confession: I adore teenage movies. It seems I just never grew out of my John Hughes phase. Forget the fact that I’m a 39 year old mother of three. Actually, I think that’s the main reason I still like these films – they let me forget that I’m a 39 year old mother of three.
Yesterday I settled in for Easy A. It’s one of the best teen movies I’ve ever seen (and we’re talking over 20 years of dedicated watching here, folks). I laughed, I cried, I winced, I cowered, I guffawed. It’s that good. Emma Stone is a modern day Molly Ringwald, but fortunately wittier, prettier and much less pathetic. Her parents are to-die-for (I can’t say I ever even noticed Molly’s parents in any of her flicks… teen flick parents are clearly aimed at, well, parents).
Of course, the real charm of teen movies these days is getting to hang out with the real-life teens who go to see them. As I sat in the cinema surrounded by over 120 teenage girls yesterday, I couldn’t help but get sucked into the effervescent fizz and pop of teen-girl life. The energy level in that cinema was of football stadium standard. Everywhere I looked there was a colourful display of hand flapping, lip smacking, hip-waggling, oh-mi-godding motion.
Do mums of teen girls feel the way I felt all the time? Alive with the spirit of what if. The rush of perfect dramas, the excitement of anything can happen, the raw possibilities of living. Being with those girls made me want to tap dance on a moon lit by dazzling stars. Forget the inner child, the inner teen, like, totally rocks.
So, do go see Easy A. It’s a top little film and the teenage girl inside you will thank you for it. Then again… she probably won’t!

I do love me a teen film – even though those years are well behind me. I’ll have to sneak out and go see it, thanks x

{giggle} I thought I was the only 30 something mum with an almost teen daughter that loved teen movies. It’s refreshing to know that I’m not. I’ll have to take myself to see Easy A.

I haven’t seen that one yet but I’m a sucker for a good teen flick, especially the the dance ones!

Ah, but was it the same without Molly’s pout? The poutiest pout in Pout Town. I love a good teen flick too. But not Twilight. That’s one’s, like, ‘whatever’.

Oh the teenage angst! It was ALL about the what if’s…the dreaming…about all that would be, could be, and so far from the reality of pimples, bad hair, puppy fat and boys not giving me a second glance (actually not much has changed has it?!) I remember playing mixed tapes over and over, creating them…oh those years! Thanks for the trip down memory lane x

I think we are secret sisters …. Easy A is next on my list for Thursday night and I CANT WAIT!! The other thing I do is read a lot of teenage books, its like reliving my youth without all of the tragic stuff happening to me all over again. Funny!

oooo I definitely want to see it 🙂

I watched 10 Things I Hate About You this weekend and it’s reignited my love of teen movies. I am going to try to organise a visit to the movies to check this out. Thanks for the tip!

I love teen movies from the 80’s, but now you’ve inspired me to go see one…especially with one of my girl friends who wouldn’t mind if we got caught up in some “what if” vocab 🙂

Thanks for popping over. I also love a teen movie but don’t get much of a chance to watch them with an 8 year old boy and husband in the house.
Mira Narnie says
was thinking it would be worth seeing! thanks for the tip – so nice that you could sit and observe and appreciate all that is going on in the teenage world today – bit of escapism is good for the soul xx

Who doesn’t love a good girly teen flick….must check this one out…..thanks for the heads up. x
KayK says
we might wait until it comes out on DVD and then get it as a family movie – for my stepdaughter.
that’s what my husband keeps saying, when he proposes those kind of movies to watch, and i stick to it. i never openly indulged into teen flicks – even as a teen! – and had an excellent time last week or so watching ‘dirty dancing’ for the first time ever, secretly and all by myself..lol
“Nobody puts baby in a corner!”
how could i even live my life without this pearl of movie goodness!?
great post!love the visual of your blog too 🙂

It is SO refreshing to hear someone talk positively about teens and their culture. I agree there is so much to love about the teen way, and while I personally am relieved to no longer dwell in the land of teen, I think they are v interesting. I even have one at home 😉

I also like to sit near teenage girls on the train and listen in to their conversations, fascinating stuff. They are so sure of themselves, they really feel they know everything. I love hearing talk so passionately about stuff and then hearing about what they are planning for the weekends, it is mainly all about the fashion – making sure they pretty much all wear the same thing. Same as we used to do.

I love a good teen movie, makes me feel young again! I haven’t heard of this one yet though, it hasn’t made its way this far north yet 🙂

Oh yes, i can’t wait, maybe i’ll take my about-to-start-highschooler. I love teen movies, it honestly feels like it was only yesterday i was one (i’m 35, mother of 4 primary schoolers) but wow, i met my husband when i was a teenager & i’m still madly in love with him like a giddy silly girl. Love Posie

Teen films are great fluff for the brain. And, the best part is that my husband loves them too.

I still adore ‘Pretty in Pink’ mu husband bought it for me last Christmas on DVD. There are so many great teen movies out there, they are fluff for the soul x

I love these movies too. And as a mum to a girl on the cusp of the teenage years I am beginning to glimpse of what is to come.
You wrote of it so beautifully… thank you for reminding me the teen years are more than door slamming and sulking.

But will diffently be taking him to this one.

I LOVE teen movies too. I think it’s cos in some ways I think I’m still 17 even though I’m double that age! I have a tradition of going to see every dance movie ever produced with a friend and they are usually quite dodgy but we have such a good laugh. It’s great escapism.
PlanningQueen says
I can’t wait to watch my favourite Molly Ringwald teen movies with my daughter when she is older. I am sure she will think they are pretty lame, but it will be such a hoot to watch them again.
Clea says
I’m a highschool teacher, and they are the most facinating, wonderful creatures ever. They have the most interesting things to say if you let them. Not sure if I’ll be that enamoured with my own when she’s a teenager, but for now I can safely say I think they’re presh. I love a job that most people cringe at when I tell them what I do… So going to EASY A 2moro night! xo
Stacia says
The other day, I watched Can’t Buy Me Love (a terribly cheesy high-school-melodrama movie starring Patrick Dempsey that I adored when I was a teenager). And I loved every minute of it! =>

I saw this movie just on the weekend and loved it. It was funny and gorgeous. Of course, I didn’t see it in the movies (on DVD while my lads slept and while hubby was away)… but I did enjoy my inner teen and also am kind of glad I’m not there again! Mind you, I wouldn’t mind being 29 again… xx

I watched Easy A and thought it was alright, but fellow teenagers didn’t really like it. Hmmm. I watched Pretty In Pink (for an English assessment task), and 10 Things I Hate About You (just because I found a DVD of it at home) some time ago and loved them both. Must get round to watching some Molly Ringwald movies soon…
Lady Estrogen says
Gaww. I am a sucker for those movies too. I’m glad to hear someone else say that about Molly – she drove me bonkers in, well, all the movies she was in.
Veronica @ Mixed Gems says
Haven’t watched a teen flick in years but should probably get into training. My girls have 10-12 years before they hit their teens, which would put me (scarily) in my 50s (silent scream!!!!!!!!). I really need to tap back in before I really shrivel up into an old fuddy duddy.
Seana Smith says
Oh dear, I haven’t seen one since… err… I was a teen! How narrow minded is that? Good prompt to check some out.
Did just get a text from my hubs: ‘Just home from watching ‘The Inbetweeners’ with MtTeen14, completely inappropriate for him!!” Maybe I can start with that one!!

I realise when you do these Weekend Rewind posts how often I read your posts (all) and don’t comment! You know that I love a teen flick. I missed Easy A. Must sort that. Thanks for Rewinding x
