Yesterday’s post on The Badoo was, well, a bit of a dud. I’m not sure why it didn’t resonate – maybe it came across as a bit boasty? Maybe people were appalled at the sight of an entire Badoo with her pants down? Maybe potty training just ain’t all that interesting?
Whatever the reason… crickets.
It got me thinking how fascinating it is that we move en masse towards some things and away from others. It’s the reason why fads are created, why celebrities come and go and why last season’s ‘must have’ item is suddenly 50c at your local Vinnies. It’s compelling that something grabs us all one minute and not the next but it’s even more compelling that it seems to happen to a vast majority of us at exactly the same time.
Our society is made up of millions of unique, creative, clever and discerning people and yet… we all do much the same thing at much the same time and we like much the same thing at about the same time too. As much as I like to think of myself as an ‘individual’ who is defiantly ‘not on trend’, I’ve come to realise that my own pattern of likes and dislikes pretty much follows the masses… with an edge (I tell myself. I please just let me have an edge!).

actually, funnily enough I did enjoy that post, and was going to comment about how we call our littlest a velociraptor because of her frightening ability to learn and escape from out many baby-traps (we are sooo proud).
But stuff got in the way (such as a mega tanty that required bed with no dinner…oh dear). So maybe everyone’s 6 y.o.s were having tantys at exactly the same time yesterday?? after all – tantys are very ‘in’ this time of year don’t you know…

Isn’t it funny, hoe sometimes a post resonates with people and other times it doesn’t. it continually flips my brain. I’ve given up trying to figure it out- posts I go ‘meh’, everyone loves, and when I think something is hysterical, no one else does! π
BabyMac says
Dud post? You call 7 comments DUD? I would be THRILLED with that. No really, I would.
I too meant to comment, but a child got in the way wanting something like food, or drink or something incidental like that. My kids do that thing all the time. ALL the big hurdles are only ever in my head!
I too always aim for an edge, but it would appear that I follow the masses. A complete sheep. Although we did move away from the masses to the country which is sooooo 2011…but there are more sheep around…? I’m confused.

I read along and rarely comment (because I’m a terrible blogger/follower that way) but that post never showed up in my reader so I had to actually come here to see what post you were talking about because surely I’d remember such a picture of The Badoo. Maybe it disappeared from other Readers too?
Our Park Life says
well I missed yesterdays post on The Badoo (must check it out right now)
But I LOVE this post….I run the risk of sounding like such a hippy here but what the hell – I think it about the collective consiousness….we all pick up on the general beliefs and thoughts of our society, even when we don’t realise we are picking up on it…
which is pobably why BOTH our sons share their names with evey second other boy out there at the moment…We thought we were picking names a little unique (not too crazy though) but seems EVERYONE else had the exact same thoughts we did….Ahhh, we thought we were trend setters, turns out we are trend followers…hee hee!

Like a few others above, I didn’t get a chance to read the post you’re referring to but I love this one. Pop culture is fascinating to me, I love the way things rise and fall in popularity and coolness, only to do the same thing a few years later. It’s very interesting!
Jane says
Well I didn’t read your Badoo post but have now. And I enjoyed it. And potty training. Lord I could do a whole blog on that. There is a word for that collective consciousness thing you describe. It will come to me at some point when my brain is less fuddled.
Not many people are truly individual. Like in marketing, as you would know, there are early adopters, followers and others…
The key thing is to not do or like something because you feel you should..

Now that I have read it I say that she is completely georgeous and that ‘i can do’ attitude will get her a long way in life. I just skipped it for some reason! I tend to think there is a spiritual reason for some trends, but I am sure you don’t want to get into that deeper here!
Anna Walker says
I didn’t read it, but I am more than happy to go check yesterdays post out, as well as your guest blog post today! π

Don’t be hard on yourself….blame it on the Christmas rush, the Silly Season, too many Christmas concerts and Awards Ceremonies and Class Parties etc etc etc keeping us away from our keyboards and screens ……
I thought she looked just gorgeous.

I shouldn’t really have called this post ‘the dud post’… it wasn’t so much the number of comments as the fact that the post sat there for hours before it received any action… we only ever need one comment, right? One is a conversation. None is… crickets. x

I read it. I liked Badoo story – love the Badoo. But you know how I am with pics of kids… Anyway, today’s post is a winner.

If you tell me whats “on trend” I will tell you if I am doing it, as I have no bloody idea most of the time!
PS I love you everyday xo

LOL, yes, 9 posts is above my bar, not below it!!
But you know what, your yesterday and today posts didn’t come up in my BlogRoll, so maybe you can blame technology! I thought her muscling into Possums was very clever! Nothing like motivation to get a toddler to achieve something!!
Jess says
I tried to open that post yesterday and couldnt..kept saying it had been removed.
Just read it though and can report that I loved it. How cool is the Badoo!? Very cool indeed!

I’m another who didn’t see yesterday’s post pop up! Isn’t that a relief? It’s like when a guy doesn’t call, and it turns out he actually left his phone in a cab…
Posie Patchwork says
I missed the post so don’t include me in the statistics. As a mother of 4, i’ve seen it all, although we didn’t use potties, my long leggy children used a seat on the real toilet, thank goodness!!
I think i’m possibly one of the biggest ‘not keeping up with the Joneses’ families ever. We have great friends, brilliant friends, but completely different to them, how we live, what we do for careers, when we had our children, we don’t even compare to our siblings.
Happiness is my judge on how things are rolling along, what else matters if you have children smiling & a safe home to sleep in at night.
Right now, with a hail storm, kind of glad our family car is the 15y.o. Landcruiser who can take a beating (inside carting 4 children around) & outside with the storm!! Love Posie

I didn’t see the post and it didn’t come up in my google thingy… Maybe you had a tech issue rather than a post issue!
One of my closest friends told me my style was “classic with a little bit of rock and roll” I was thrilled with that but having thought about it, I think she was just trying to make me feel good…
PartlySunny says
Since practically every TV show I ever fall in love with gets canceled, I’m gonna go ahead and stick myself in the “off trend” category. Network executives should hire me to figure out what to cut.

Post didn’t show up in my roll, either. And she is super-cute with a can-do attitude. She’s gonna go a long way.
Mammamusing says
Hmmm I didn’t see your post either? Maybe a techanical hitch?
Cute post though. Such a sweet photo.
I can only hope toilet training goes as smoothly here π

Interesting today *and* yesterday…
Being an individual? As in special and unique? It used to feel important when I was younger…
I think the older I get the more comfortable I am accepting I’m not that different from many, many people. And I get more comfortable and open about my quirks too. It’s all ok π
Glen says
These things happen. I’ve written what I believed to be fantastic – thought provoking pieces, and heard nothing but the wind whistle past my comments box. No worries.
I think being individual is nice but not so important as being who you truly are – even if who you are is not an individual – if that makes sense – which it may very well not do
Sarah says
The post didn’t come up yesterday. It had been removed for some reason I think??? And yes sometimes I write stuff I really care about and I get crickets as well. I figure as long as I’m happy with it I don’t mind. Mostly!

‘Twas having one of *those* days yesterday, and I opened that post, and never got to read it because *that’s* when the 3yo stood on the DVD cover (commented about it in FB) and I had to put him in time out.
I’ve spoken to Lori (above) about this before. Yep – some posts I think people will like, and there’s not much interest…others I’m baffled as to why they get a good response when I thought I hadn’t written anything particularly exciting.
Your blog, for example, has become really popular very quickly and I know I love it, and it stands out for me from other blogs, but I can’t explain exactly why! Is it the pics? The writing? The honesty? Probably all of those. I don’t know…it just works! And whilst I’d love to have…let’s see…oh, 482 followers now! – I can’t be you. I just have to do my own thing and see what happens. Take my own journey. And I’m happy to do that. I don’t try and write like others. I just try to be me. If you’re happy with your post…that’s all that matters!

I think you need to rename your “dud post” to everyone “missed post”! I’ve just read it. Very funny. Brought back all those lovely memories of potty training π

hmfp – dud post. my butt. i didn’t comment because it’s a pain in that same behind to comment from my phone. just haven’t gotten around to going back and commenting on anything really. stalking instead. but since i recently went back to work part time … partly for a friend, partly to appease my husband, i think, and not for me…..what’s wrong with being a mom? or an artist? hmmm? that’s something. oh, and i’m in operations

The sentiment of this post….ahghrgh…it’s like you read my mind, and then found a far more articulate way to say it….but better.
If we didn’t live in different hemispheres, I’m pretty sure we would be related.
Totally agree about this sort of odd phenomenon of things that repel and attract…I see it all the time with my work and on my blog. I know there are consultants and trend watchers who pretend to predict these things, but it’s always fun to see what pans out in the end!
Kymmie says
I definitely think that there is so much of us that are the same, but it’s the way we say it and how we approach it. But you are DEFINITELY an individual! (And you have a way of saying things unlike any other.) xx
