I’m a big talker; love, love, love a chat. It’s one of the reasons why I’m such a big commenter on your blog. Chatterbox = Commenter = true. Some days I visit and don’t have time for comments… but there is something that I think would help me out greatly.
On Blogger blogs, you can change the way your comment box works. Instead of having the comments ’embedded below post’, you can have a pop-up box appear.
Why is this helpful?
Well, it simply means that when we comment, the word verification is right there. We leave a comment, do the word veri and hit ‘Publish Your Comment’ and we’re done. If you haven’t got a separate pop-up box, we comment, we hit Publish, we wait for your whole blog site to reload and then we do the word veri and then we hit Publish again… hmmmm… takes a lot more time and it’s lots of extra page loads to be dealing with. You can still view the comments embedded after your post anytime you click on the actual post.
So, in my dream blogland, we would all go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘Comments’ and then change our ‘Comment form placement’ setting to ‘Pop-up window’.
That is my wish.*
* Of course I have much more important wishes to wish than just this little wish. Like, I also wish that world hunger did not exist, that wars were only part of history books and that I had Sienna Miller’s wardrobe, but I thought I would start small and build up from there…

agree
Mrs Woog says
Ahhhh – that was so easy!
Fiona says
My wish – that people didn’t use the word verification, because so often I can cranky at getting it wrong. Maybe there are spam issues with it that I don’t know about it being selfhost WP. Oh And that more people allowed name/url rather than required signing in to blogger/google.
Karen Wilson says
I’ve always been annoyed by the pop-up comment box… because I hate pop-ups (I love tabbed browsing), but now that you’ve given me a good reason to like it I think I agree!!
It’s funny how we don’t think of these things till someone else points it out.
Frog, Goose and Bear says
hmmm, never thought about it. Didn’t know you could change it.
Your wish has been granted – I have just gone and changed it – just for you xo You are the number one commenter on my blog after all 🙂
You can go and work on getting rid of world hunger now 😉
DanniiBeauty says
Great suggestion! I have changed mine, I also don’t like pop up boxes! LOL……. now thats sorted!
Naomi says
woo hoo! I already have that on my blog. Great wish.
I wish that people would turn that dreaded word verification off but I totally understand why people have it – darn spam!
Naomi x
Toni says
I’ve always had the pop-up window but only cos I didn’t know there was another way to do it.
I turned off word veri ages ago because it drives me mad too. Now I just hop into my comments and delete the spam every now and again.
I’m off to check out the signing in thing now, thanks for the tip, Fiona.
Belinda - Nest Design Studio says
your wish is my command! It has annoyed me in the past but hadn’t actually thought about changing it on my blog!
ejorpin says
Good point but I’m on the side of doing away with word verification altogether – I’ve got comment moderation switched on, and I get my emails on my mobile so I’ll pretty much verify your comment straight away (unless I’m sleeping of course).
But then again, I have just over 60 blog followers, I’d imagine comment verification becomes nigh on impossible when you got 600+ followers! If I ever, ever get to that stage I promise I’ll do a pop up box!
Beck says
Ahhh im doing this right now!

That’s so bizarre…I literally just changed mine to a pop-up box this morning because I realised the frustration of the other way on other blogs! Great tip – keep them coming. Us blogging virgins need all the help we can get! x
Michelle says
Ok done .Thanks for the tip.
Alice Becomes says
Done! Just for you….
Like Frog, Goose and Bear, I have never thought about this before but you are one of our top commenters so thought we would grant your wish!

BabyMac says
Aaaaaaan done. I feel ashamed that this was not the case – how annoying! Maxabella, saving the world one blogging tip at a time…x
Wanderlust says
Your wish is my command! Though I would also suggest turning off word verification. I did it ages ago and I never, NEVER, get spam.
sarah says
i just changed it…. thanks for letting me know about this simple change.
PlanningQueen says
To be honest I have to really like a blogger blog to comment as I find all the systems a bit painful!
Gina says
Good point…I need to check the settings on mine. I don’t think I have the word verification so that would make it even quicker :).
Laura says
I didnt think about it!!…changed!!
•´.¸¸.•¨¯`♥.Trish.♥´¯¨•.¸¸.´• says
I agree – I think I’ve lost a lot of comments made to some blogs because I forget to go back and check the word verification thing.
I don’t like word verification unless you are getting lots of spam.
Blogger makes it easier to delete them now anyway in one hit.
I only have word verification on posts older than 2 weeks. I found I only got spam mostly on older posts anyway.
Kerry says
I would also like it if people turned of their no-reply comment blogger thingy or whatever it is. Because sometimes when people leave a comment I want to email them right back and say something nice 🙂
Stacia says
You may want Sienna’s wardrobe, but be glad you’ve got LOML and not that scoundrel Jude Law!
PS: Thanks for allowing me to type this comment in a pop-up. =>
Becky says
Agreed. I am like Trish, I think I leave before the verification comes up when not using the pop-up.
Lucy says
My other wish list for all things Blogger is to have everybody get rid of world verification. And also for people include their email address on their blogger profile…
Jane says
Ah, Bron, nodding in Hobart. But what would make blogging infinitely more fun would be for people to turn off their word verification altogether.
I did it months ago. I’ve had a couple of spam comments which Blogger quarantined in the Spam folder (so I then deleted them)and another two which snuck through but I just deleted them.
I think my readers appreciate the experience of having their comments published instantly so much more than the minor inconvenience I may have of occasionally having to delete a spam comment.
But each to their own! I’m sure others have very good reasons for using word veri. J x
Maxabella says
I don’t think I could give up the psychic word verification just yet… it provides me with hours of amusement (as well as frustration!) x
Jodie at Mummy Mayhem says
I’m with Jane. Down with word verifications!
I know why people use them, but boy, are they extra work.
I wish Blogger would come up with a whole new comment system actually. But I’ve also learnt that there’s no such thing as the perfect commenting system. I’ve used Blogger’s, Echo and now Disqus – all of which have their issues.
I have no problems at ALL using Disqus on other blogs, which is why I decided to use it myself. And the best part? I never have to ‘login’ like I do with Blogger. BUT – I’ve had a number of people complain they can’t load my comments or post them on my blog etc. 🙁
Come on, Blogger – come up with an even EASIER commenting system. Please?!
kirsty says
thanks for the tip, had no idea it could be made easier – doh!
x
Madmother says
Done! I had this set up on my other blog, or at least one of them, lol, but not the primary one.
Oh, and I loathe Disqus. Honestly, I walk away from commenting so many times when disqus is involved!
beck says
I’m going to check this later! Thanks for the tip xo
supermac says
Done! And thanks for the tip ;-D
supermac says
PS. Didn’t really know the diff between embedded and pop up until this post. Haha. So this is really helpful.
MomAgain@40 says
Thanks for making the point. I have also turned off word verification, because it makes the process just so much cumbersome! 😀
Miss Pink says
How about if word verification is off? Can i bypass the pop up?
Maxabella says
Miss Pink – your commenter would still have to wait for your whole blog to reload again to see if the comment was correctly published…
ANB says
I wanted to change it a while ago, didn’t know how, thought it would involve something complicated and html-y but now it is done! What an easy way of making us both happy 🙂
Hannah says
Changed mine =)
I didn’t even know which setting I had mine on, Thanks for the heads up !!
Miss Ruby says
i don’t have a pop up box but i don’t have word verification 😉
~x~
p.s. wanderlust, you know you’ve just jinxed yourself now re spam don’t you? 😛
Rhi@FlourChild says
Done! Thanks for the tip, I didn’t realise why it did that either. Bugs me on other blogs and I’m sure many comments have been lost because I forget to hit publish the second time. I don’t have word verification either, and I have never got spam..
Thanks Maxabella! x
Mammamusing says
My request is everyone gets rid of word verification!
The number of times I’ve posted a comment and submitted and then clicked away only to see I’ve shutdown prematurely and my comment isn’t posted. Ahhhh it annoys me and I know I should but I rarely go back and repost.
Ok I’m prepared for this one as I know to expect word verification.
Please get rid of it.
melissa says
I turned off the pop up option (and the word verification) because people kept getting errors with the pop ups.
I agree with whoever sai dit would be nice if people had their email addresses set rather than going to reply and it being no-reply@blogger etc…
m.e (Cathie) says
let’s try & sort out world hunger too, we’ll have a bake off.
i don’t have word verification, it annoys me, so that should make it easier for you to pop by whenever you want
♥
Andrea - The Buckles x says
done! xx
Jess says
done and dumped the word vero too 🙂
Laura says
Ingenious. Brilliant!
Easier commenting = me commenting way more 🙂
_vTg_ says
Thanks for the tip! I had wondered many times why some blogs had pop-ups and others didn’t! Sorted- so simple!!
Now, to compose some posts for comments….. (taking a bloggy break so all my writing energy can be focussed on The New Job this week!)
Maxabella says
Ok, word veri removed. x
Kelly says
Oh yes I agree completely, makes blogging easier indeed!

🙁 I feel so left out.
Damn word press.
I got help from a friend when I first set up my blog and he suggested WP.
I hate not being one of the cool B girls LOL xox
Donna @ NappyDaze says
OH I am so excited to hear about this tip – the tech side of blogging might as well be in Swahili as there must be much I am NOT doing that would make life easier. Off to make Maxabella’s wish my command…
ClaireyH says
Phew, I already have that.
My little wish is for people to ditch DISQUS, Seems to be the trendy thing to get. takes forever to load on mobile products, I have to log in every time and i rarely comment on those blogs now unless I am at the real computer…hardly ever.
Life In A Pink Fibro says
LOL. I love it. You know that it’s my wish too. I’m also with ClaireyH. Disqus is not a love of mine.
myshoeboxlife.com says
Oh my, feeling very much out of the loop. Being on WordPress, I have no idea how the whole comment thing works there at all. All I know is most blogs (Blogger) I read I have to double load to comment.
74 Lime Lane says
well i’m with those on WordPress but I have to uh-huh agree with you here and also second Fiona’s comment right up the top!
And look at you – you are a world changer, you should definitely try the world hunger thing next!
nicole says
definitely and completely agree!
i have a friend (who is very new to blogger) who thought she’d been leaving very clever comments on my blog for a few weeks but hadn’t as she’d never waited for the verification box!
silly blogger really, making that the default.
Jacki says
I never knew how to do that! It was too easy! Thanks for the tip!
Being Me says
Agree with ClaireyH: Disqus is a piece of (what’s something derogatory that rhymes with Disqus). Pisscus, maybe?
I already have the pop-up on my comments, because I prefer it on other blogs too. I’ll consider turning off word veri, but if the spam comes back as rampant as it was a couple of years ago, it’s going back on! *angry eyes at stupid spammers*
Salamander says
Wow. Every day you teach me something new. What else can I do to make my blog better, oh wise one???? Teach me!!!!!!! *grovel grovel* (my kids already have me on my knees, I may as well put it to good use!)
Penny says
O cool, just did it, and it’s way better! Thanks for the tip
Brenda @ Mira Narnie says
OMG – another reason why i love you! I’m off to check out my settings, and i might ditch word veri too!
alliecat says
Thanks for the community service announcement. I didn’t really know how it all worked, and didn’t know the difference those preferences can make!
lisa says
done and dusted thanks so much xx
Cate says
holy cow! 65 comments about pop up windows! I’m starting to feel pretty glad that I already changed my settings…
I think I’d better switch off word vari before the villagers grab their pitchforks…
(just kidding)
xxxCate
Tas says
See your point. OK changed! Even the word verfiication thingy. If everyone gets rid of it, I will miss that spooky coincidental word verification thing that happens occasionally. Easily tempered by the annoyance factor of having to do it in the first place though 😛
Cherie @ 'a baby called Max' says
So simple. So effective!
How lovely. Thankyou!
I’m also a conversationalist. And love commenting and showing my appreciation for the many amazing blogs I’ve stumbled in my new adventures in blogging!
Saucy B says
That’s how mine is set up and I do prefer it that way.
Like many other commenters, I’m be big supporter of turning off the word verification. I did about 6 months ago. I do get a handful of spam comments, but blogger separates them out so I haven’t had any actually show up on my blog.
MultipleMum says
Only the odd Russian makes it through the SPAM filter but then, that often adds to the conversation. Thanks for Rewinding. Better late than never huh? x
