My little wish for commenting was really quite a big wish and it came true. So many blogs seem to have changed their comments to pop-up and it’s just so much easier to leave a note. I notice this particularly when I’m doing the Grateful rounds. It’s fab.
Many of the commenters (and Jane in particular!) mentioned that while we were at it we really ought to get rid of word verification.
So I did.
I’ve hardly had any spam and 99% of it has been caught by the ‘Spam’ box. The other 1% has been caught by my ‘approval if post older than 3 days’ setting. I have always had that setting because I would hate to miss a comment!
So, I highly recommend turning off the word verification and seeing how you go.
Of course, I will miss my strange moments in word verification, but I think I’ll live…

I too have had a little bit of spam, but so far all has been caught by the spam filter…so I’ll carry on without word verification for now 🙂
Although I did sometimes get a giggle out of the words – my fav so far has been ‘ednerdle’ – don’t ask me why…

I still think of you and your wise words every time I leave a comment. I call it the Maxabella Movement of Blog Time Management hehehe xx

I have noticed a difference too, it is so much easier, now if you could do a post about making sure people don’t have blocked blogger profiles that would be great…especially when they enter competitions.

I just found your blog and after reading this post disabled the word verification option on my blog.
Thank you, I will sleep so much better.
Brenda @ Mira Narnie says
it’s funny but you spoke and so many listened and it was like a light bulb moment for me, when now i go and visit blogs that don’t have pop up windows – and i start to roll my eyes! i’m pretty sure i ditched the word veri too, but i better go check….
i’m just so grateful you mentioned it….
us lacking in the technical side of computer knowledge is very thankful indeed!
xx

bless you Maxabella!
so happy with the change 🙂
I too hope you will live without word verification in your life but I think you will have no problem filling that need with another.

hah, and all you had to do was ask 🙂

Oh, I didn’t even know you could turn word verification off! I must go work it out. It’s so darn annoying, isn’t it/ Thanks for that advice xx
A Country Wife says
Oh how funny, I hate pop up comment boxes because they get hidden behind all my pages and I have to go searching for them (yes, still trying to navigate my new Mac…)! I much prefer commenting at the end of a post. I’m off to read your post about them because it seems I’m missing something about their usefulness.
Oh, and as for word verification, they drive me insane, thank you thank you Jane for requesting people turn them off!
Chrissy xx

A big thank you to yourself and Jane for showing people the way.
I wonder if people who have word verification realise how many comments they might be missing out on because someone types a note and clicks the comment button, assumes that the deed is done & clicks away before the word verification has time to pop up?
Just saying – it would be a shame to miss out on thoughtful comments.

Honestly, I haven’t noticed who’s changed and who still has comments in the posts. But… I’m happy for people who comment on my blog that they don’t have to go through the word veri thing either. Spam must have really been nipped mostly in the bud in the past few years since I’ve had it turned on, as I’ve had just one!
LionessLady says
I seem to have been getting bunches of bizarre religious spam of late so until it stops I’m leaving my word verification on! 🙂
ForeverRhonda says
Oh thank you! I hate the word verification.
Trish@Show and Tell says
I have made the changes too….So glad you gave step by step instructions, however!! Technology, not a strong point.

It’s been on my ‘to do’ list for a while, but the comment system on my blog is now fixed 🙂

Isn’t it amazing how when one asks, so many are happy to do. You are one influential lady Bron! Just going to check to see if I have word verification on now… xx

Now all we need is for bloggers make their email viewable. By this I mean that bloggers can link their email address to their Blogger/Google profile, so that when they leave a comment, the owner of the blog can see their email address in the email notification and reply back directly via email….
Is that gobbledeygoop? Or am I making sense?!
Jane says
Oh, Bron, thanks for the mention, you lovely girl. I’m so delighted it has worked for you.
If anyone else wants to know how to do it, I did a post on it the other day at http://www.lifeonplanetbaby.com/2011/02/tutorial-handling-comments-and-email.html

Ha … strange moments in word verification! I love it! I was actually making a list of crazy words that sounded quite legit if spoken quickly or with an Elle McPherson accent. I had about 20 of them on a piece of paper beside the computer. I’d jot the odd one down when it caused a chuckle during moments of word verification. Unfortunately someone has thrown it out … ahh!!! I’m so glad Jane did that post, even though I no longer have as many moments to jot down totally useless ‘words’. The word verification was an absolute pain if using Google Reader on the iPad. I ditched mine too.

I’m with Lucy! I love being able to email directly back to commenters as people don’t always follow up the comments section if you’ve replied. Perhaps a 3rd and final wish? ps. I have noticed a difference around the blogworld. Amazing the impact you can have 😉 x

Yes DOWN WITH VERIFICATION.
Honestly verification turns me off commenting some blogs, it’s such a PITA i want to say my piece and leave it at that.
Frog, Goose and Bear says
Yes, as many have said before, maybe you could use your influence regarding linking your email address with your blog. So many just don’t know about it. My sister had been blogging for years and didn’t know about it until I informed her.
Tenille @ Help!Mum says
Ooh I second this! I am not a fan of word verification.
And anyway, some spam can be quite lovely 🙂
MomAgain@40 says
I have also turned mine off a long time ago! It just makes it soo much easier!
Naturally Carol says
I have no clue what hoops you go through on mine but I’ll have a little look tonight!
Deer Baby says
I get virtually no spam at all. I sometimes wonder if there is a folder somewhere where it all is. Not going to go looking!
Well done you for starting this. There’s nothing more offputting than having to go through a string of hoops just to leave a comment.
Andrea says
I slavishly followed your advice :p
Alice Becomes says
done! i never really cared too much about spam anyway!
you are leading the way in bloggy revolution….that can only be a good thing xo
