Magdalena over at The Craft Revival has revived my love of letting it all hang out on my blog. She’s put the word out that today is the day to take a snap of our ‘unworthy-of-a-magazine-shoot life’ and show the world that the over-styled life is just an impossible dream / nightmare (depending on your fancy).
Last time I showed up that Cappers and her propensity to paint the carpet. This time Maxi-Taxi is exposed in all his boy-mess glory. Oh, okay, he’s seven, she’s five. It’s really me that’s getting exposed…
This mess of awful looking brand merchandising is in fact Maxi’s ‘crash mat’ area for his OT and it hangs around on the floor permanently like an extra unmade bed. I would just like to point out that I have never in my life purchased an item of branded merchandise… so why do we have so much of it lurking distastefully around?
PS – This is my first time using Instagram and I kinda like it but I think I should have kept the images a bit smaller… can you even see them? If you can’t, that’s good news for me!
PPS – I will be adding some less obscure posts about my truckin’ adventure after my Grateful moment this weekend. Missed you all very much (seriously, how wrong is that!?) x

At least the books were on the shelf. My small girl keeps spreading them on the floor because she is reading them – yes mummy all of them

LOVE the Cushions’s conversation! 😀
There’s this one quote I love “Please Excuse the Mess, the children are making memories!” Just remember that and tell it to people!

Woo hoo! You’re back! Ah, this post follows on from your ‘over-styled life’ one. It’s just fabulous to see you keeping it real, Bron. Maybe a little different to the Tim Coulson shoot ☺ J x

seriously i just wondered what my pillows were all doing on the couch today…they’re all haphazard and i know when i bought them i intended them to do great decorating things for my couch.

Ohhhhh I LOVE this!!
Love the honesty.
Everything is so over styled these days.
I’m only new to your blog, but it’s fantastic!
Love the quote one of your readers wrote above about “children making memories”. So beautiful. So true 🙂

Love it! I gave our cushions away as I was so sick of seeing them lying on the floor. Disarrayed on the couch – I could live with that. My kids never make their beds either, in fact Bear thinks his doona lives on the floor. He loves to take the cover off as well and play ‘boats’ on the floor… every day… I used to make them, but why bother if it’s not going to last! I can think of better uses for my time!

Hello, just stumbled upon your blog and I love this post. You are witty and adorable. Looking forward to reading more!

I bought my little man a bookcase.
Ummm, he fails to see the need. The books are always located on the floor and the bookcase stand alone.
Miss Pink says
I will have to try and do this tonight!
Also it’s great that i’m the only one that refuses to buy “branded” things for my kids. I feel it can quickly outdate, and honestly I prefer the look of things without brands *shrugs*
Also our “bed making” is exactly the same. Just the covers pulled up so they’re ready for you to jump in. Nothing wrong with that!

Does anyone really want to see reality at my house..I don’t think so..it looks just like everybody elses messy bits and I don’t have the excuse of kids! It turns out I am messier than I thought..I have to take the responsibility here..lol.

My place looks like a homeless persons place if there were indeed willing to live in such squalor
Leanne says
It is a good thing that our value is not proportional to the tidiness of our houses.

That new girl Laura seems nice… 🙂 x

I tweeted out a series of photos of the rooms in my house the week before last. They were a mess and I preferred photographing them to you know, actually tidying them. I can’t ‘do’ cushions because I simply don’t have the patience to tidy them up. Hopeless! Your home looks warm and cosy, am I invited over?
Linda says
I love this post!! Things don’t get better with age, my girls at 12 and 18 well ummmm their rooms are worse than when they were toddlers!!! I just close the doors now

Wow, you are brave doing a post like this!
My house is pretty trashy at the moment.
We have two clothes horses with towels and linen drying in one corner of the lounge and in the other is a chair disguised as a mountain of clean clothes waiting to be folded.
Because we are moving next week, I have boxes everywhere too, and the bathrooms have been neglected.
Nicola
PS, I think the grandparents are to blame for branded stuff!
Cindy says
Ahhh I love this post and the idea from Magdalena! 🙂
I’ll def try to do it! I always feel so bad because my life is like this…messy and real, and not as pretty as most bloggers portray their lives. : /
Chantel says
My immediate reaction is – how homely! The photos feel warm and inviting – and then reading others comments, they obviously got the same vibe. My house is always looks very lived in, but providing I keep the floor clean and the dishes done (must get off computer and do that), I think it is welcoming.
Taryn says
ha!!! nearly wet my pants reading this!!! I will have to do this of my house soon…thanks for a great post to brighten up the afternoon xxx

It is so refreshing to see such happy mess. xx
Megan Blandford says
I think I should do this – after posting pictures of my house post-renovations (and before rooms are messed up) perhaps I should show the normal?!
Kellie says
My son turned one yesterday. It’s like Fisher Price threw up in my lounge room.

Brave soul you are, when my little ones come over it takes me three days to clean up don’t know how my daughter does it LOL! But I just love having them with me they can make all the mess they like I think I make the most with them.
Love getting your emails, when you get some spare time hope you come and visit my blog http://lovewendysworld.blogspot.com

I love it! Your house is calm compared to how it used to be when i had little ones around.
Times has passed and now my grandchildren have picked up where my children have left off. lol
I think they have an adversion to pillows on the couch. They prefer them on the floor. 🙂

Your house looks perfectly cosy and welcoming. We need more of this in the blogosphere, I think social media tends to create an inaccurate view of an overstyled world: we forget people put on their best digital face when they post pics up on the web.

Thanks for playing along and revealing your reality!

Oh, I must say my house is a mighty fine example of chaos and destruction. And that’s just the renovating! The boys… well they are a whole new lot of destruction.
Your house has NOTHING on mine. And if this was a competition, I’d win.
But of course, I know it’s not 😉 xx
m.e (Cathie) says
sheesh, you call that a mess! my kids beds hardly ever get done and as for full washing baskets waiting to be folded…don’t get me started.
a well lived in house is filled with love and happy kids…well maybe sometimes a frazzled mum, but hey, i am all for it.
thanks for sharing Miss Maxabella ♥

I learnt some home styling secrets this week that I thought I would share, and I suspect you all know about deep down anyway.
Pictures of houses you see in magazines are as doctored as women in magazines. I redid my bathroom and few months agao, and it was photgraphed for a magazine, but not as is! they brought an entire room full of soaps, cosmetics, towels, flowers, and little containers. They spent ALL DAY styling and photographing my little bathroom, and then took all the stuff back with them. There were 3 people working on it!!! Then they plan to photoshop out the exhaust fan, the window locks, the dirty glass and a tap here and there that is about function not fashion. They mentioned doing a shoot in a bedroom as well, but deceided against it as it was on the second floor, and they normally bring ALL the furniture a for shoots! So really, you don’t ever think that people look like they do in magazines, well rooms don’t either and no one lives that way!
