I think we’ve established many times over that I am slightly mad, especially when it comes to children’s parties.
Which explains why I am chest-deep in tulle creating 22 rainbow tutus for Cappers’ upcoming Rainbow Party. Make that 23 as I was requested to make a tutu for Cappers’ ‘puppy’ while I was at it.
Oh my, it’s so much work but oh-extra-my they are going to be so beautiful!
And cheap. Tulle on sale at about $2 a metre works out to be about $3 a tutu including the satin ribbon. You’ve gotta love that! They are so very easy to make – no sewing involved. Check out this tutorial from Paige and Brooke. I a wide satin ribbon instead of elastic for the waist band (the ribbon ties in a bow at the back and looks lovely) and I’m making mine shorter than the tutorial suggests as I wanted that ‘corps de ballet’ effect with the tutu standing straight up. Plus, when you’re making 22 of the darn things, every little bit of tulle saved is a blessing really.
I had the thought that ‘make a matching tutu for your doll’ could be a fun party craft, but Cappers’ really struggled with making the knot and I didn’t fancy sitting at the party making 22 doll’s tutus for everyone, so I scrapped that idea.
I’ll show you all the pretty rainbow maids all in a row when I post about the party in a couple of weeks time.
Are you mad for parties like me?
Do you also like to go that bit further to do something extra special?
LionessLady says
Bron…. love love love them! The girls are going to look ‘tutu’ cute!
Felicity says
YOU. ARE. A. LEGEND!!!!
Deb @ home life simplified says
Those are going to be amazing. I am not a crafty mom but I am known for my kids birthday parties – I always work with them picking a theme, tying in a related craft + games + cake and other food.
Are you making the rainbow cake – we did that for a Rainbow magic party and that was THE hit of all the parties we have had. Can’t wait for the photos!
Maxabella says
Deb, OF COURSE I’m making ‘the’ cake… I hope!!!! x
Rachel {Little Bits of Lovely} says
Sounds like such fun; I definitely can’t wait to have kids so I can play these games too! xo
Mammamusing says
I love a rippin’ kids party but must admit I’m no where near as clever as you.
Can’t wait to to see the tutus lined up in a row 🙂
PinkPatentMaryJanes says
I’m not quite as mad as you {mainly because I skipped the craft-gene} but I do love to throw a good party. We spend quite a few months plotting the theme, decorations, and cake. Love this idea – can’t wait to see the end results.
ally says
oh my oh my oh my
brilliant!!

Love a good party! In the middle of pirate party preparations with a 12 day old baby on my hip – interesting!!
Sam-O says
I used to be like you…
Now, just 6 birthday parties in (plus a couple of baptisms) I couldn’t even think about 40ths for the Workaholic and I this year and I have been struggling with the little Man’s 5th birthday party for the end the month. I could’ve jumped up and kissed the moon when he announced yesterday that he wanted a Pirate party, AGAIN. Yep he wants, the same pirate, the same decorations and the same pirate ship from the toy library… Thankfully all available and arranged 5 minutes after he told me. 🙂
I just can’t find the energy for parties anymore.
Permanently twenty three says
Farout man, that should be an Olympic sport. You’d get the gold medal for sure, Cathy Freeman style. xx
Cherie @ 'a baby called Max' says
You are BEAUTIFUL!
Just beautiful!
And I honestly can’t wait to see that photo 🙂
And I am exactly the same 🙂
Lisa says
I can’t say I lived for kids parties. The best bit was always when everyone went home.
Although I was good a finding games that lasted ages. Like eating a donut hanging from a string, tied to the clothes line, slightly out of reach with your hands behind your back. You’ve never seen a donut last so long. Game over. Oh look, it’s home time.
ClaireyHewitt says
I do! More than I ever thought, I really enjoy thinking about and planning their parties.
I admit the youngest missed out last year and I am still feeling the guilt, so this year she is getting a pretty in pink ballet dancing theme and the eldest wants a Witches Ball, from the Justine Clarke song. I have a few months to go but will be chasing up everything around Halloween for ideas on that one.
Catherine says
I’m loving those cute tutus and I know that 22 other girls are going to squeal with delight. x
Mrs Bok - The Bok Flock says
Oooooooooooooo thanks for the inspiration… I’ve gotta plan a party for a fortnight away…no idea what to do but theme is wild animals as Miss Bok (7) is going through a rainforest animals/dinosaurs stage (sigh no tutus here…). It’ll be in our garden. So it better not rain!! Our home cannot fit 30 kids inside it!!!! Any ideas for theming it up?? Got crocs visiting already. Just need decoration ideas for inside the garage (where the croc man will be showing the kids the croc!) xoxo
Rhi@FlourChild says
Wow! You’re a legend. I made one tutu for my girl’s birthday, and yes it was easy, but TWENTY TWO!!! OMG! I even used rolls of tulle so barely had to cut it up at all. Are you cutting up the strips by yourself? Crazy lady!
It’s going to look spectacular.
x Rhi
annie says
Don’t forget to make one for yourself, long and special maybe with a turban like Miss Lily. I wore one for my daughter’s first 6 or 7 parties over denim shorts with singlets etc, often a tiara. The goils love it!
Stacey says
I Love this! You’re a woman after my own heart!!!
Yes I do go a wee bit mad for parties but not 23-handmade-tutu’s kinda mad!!
Go girl, if anyone can do it YOU can!

Mum on the Run says
Wooo hoo!!
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous x 22 (or 23)!
Is it really sad that I CAN NOT wait to hear all about it?!
🙂
supermac says
What a great idea. You are a wonderful mom. I am terribly jealous (sigh) but inspired as well to do something similar for my girls.
Alice Becomes says
No, I can’t say that I am but it’s early days for me really. Even though I am not crafty in the slightest, I think what you do is lovely. It makes the day super special after all

It’s going to be “what dreams are made of” party for your daughter.
It sounds like you get a lot of pleasure from doing it for her.
therhythmmethod says
Can you make one for me? x
rex says
They are super cool, I am not sure I could make 22 though! How very lovely, those kids are going to love them. I am going to make one for my daughter though, and will tell my friends about them, because they love making their kids stuff too.
You are a very generous Mama!
Bean's Mummy says
Just gorgeous! I hope to make them in the future for the Bean, thanks for the inspiration. She has just turned one and I went overboard – baked everything from scratch, made the invites from paper & ribbon plus all the house decorations…and did it all 3 times! We had 3 first birthdays for her, because our house is tiny and we wanted to celebrate it with everyone. Nutso! But so much fun!
Kelly @ Polkadot Lane says
Wow – they are going to look amazing! I am like you, and pretty much always go that extra, crazy bit for our parties, much to the eye-rolling amusement of my hubby 😛 Like making 10 full frilly aprons for my daughters cupcake party…fun times x
mel @ loved says
I LOVE the look of this & the sound of the rainbow party, can’t wait to see your photos! I have the big boy’s birthday this weekend, just 4 friends over, a quite ‘do’ but you betcha I’ll be decorating!!
Alison @ MelbourneMumma says
I do love planning the extra special little touches to my boys’ parties…usually involving going overboard with decorations, cakes that are completed at 2am, and unique party bags 🙂 But 23 tutus?! WOW. I’m super impressed!
Teresa says
Oh god, I can hardly wait to see this party!
I think 22 rainbow tutus is just fabulous!…have also been known to make matching outfit for dolly (needless to say ‘Jemima’ does not wear her miniture handmade fairy wings as much as I would like to see)
I’m glad to see that I am not the only slightly mad party loving mum out there.
Good luck with the rest of the rainbow preparations xo
Ms Kate says
Wow, yes, you’re a hopeless case LOL
Bet you’ll be dreaming about tutus!!!
edenland says
I adore the parties you throw for your children. That Harry Potter one? Needs to be featured in a goddamn magazine.
And I will never no not ever make a tutu, so I can come here and live vicariously through yours. X
Zoey @ Good Googs says
I am a lazy party maker. LAZY. But I secretly wish I could get myself together to do something spectacular. I expect a rainbow party might be in my future with two girls 😉
Katie says
23 tutu’s = awesome! I think I need to make myself one for my 30th 🙂
Posie Patchwork says
Yes, mothers joke about giving me a score now for the parties. The daddies love me as i make them a party favour bag filled with my amazing sausage rolls to reheat at home. I’m just the whole party package, years of training & performances, between my 4 children there have been dozens of parties – all at home & we skip some years!! Love Posie
Lizeylou says
Gee your a great mumma!!
Actually Mummy... says
Gosh I love those so much I want one myself! What little girl wouldn’t fall in love with a party full of those?
kylie says
Sounds like fun… I’m sure I have one or two little ballerinas who would just love one of these. Thanks for the linky. Great to see you’re so enthusiastic! 23 tutus is an incredible effort!
Wombat's Picnic says
Can you be my mum, as I never got 22 tutus for all my party guests:) What a fab idea, I am sure there will be some very happy little girls! Cyndy
emma @ frog, goose and bear says
I am LOVING that tutu! I was just thinking about them today and wondering how easy they were. You are MAD making them for 22 kids – I absolutely LOVE that you did! You know that I am completely mad in that area also and am currently contemplating making superhero capes for 10 little girls for a party in November. Bring it on!
Jacki says
You’re amazing! It sounds like it’s going to be the most wonderful party!
Naturally Carol says
Hi Maxabella..your ‘all out’ is certainly out there! I can’t wait to see the party pics.
The Tame Lion says
Excellent!
Taryn says
ooooooo….me likey!!!!
Kellie says
I can’t wait to see them, Bron. What a fabulous idea! I bet it will be a fabulous party!
I have to admit, this post makes me a tad sad. We were meant to be celebrating Baby Holly’s first birthday tomorrow with a little party, but unfortunately both the girls have gone down with Hand Foot and Mouth Disease. 🙁 Bad timing! We also now have a house full of party food and no guests!!
Kymmie says
I love how much you love parties. I didn’t have it in me to do a party for the lads this year, but next year, it will be a big combined one (they are two days apart). We’re already working on a theme. Yep, getting in early!
Can’t wait to see the end result. They look fabulous!
Kylie @ The Rockgarden says
When I first read that you were making 22 tutus for your kid’s party I thought you were INSANE! But then I read the tutorial and you know what? That is a really effective, cheap and reasonably easy thing to do, and you will (continue to) go down in history as the most awesome party host EVER.
I might even have a go at making one. ONE.
Rhonda says
I go nuts over parties as well. That’s why my husband is making me cancel our annual Halloween party because we just have too much going on and he knows I can’t keep it simple! I love making tu-tus. I sell them on my Etsy shop.
