There are way more exciting heroines out there than Dora the Explorer and those ghastly Saddle Club chickadees. A Mighty Girl (who’s tagline is the marvellous “The world’s largest collection of books and movies for smart, confident, and courageous girls”) lists 75 dashing candidates in this terrific round-up. As well as the familiar Anne, Pippi, Harriet and Charlotte, try books like The Penderwicks, 11 Birthdays and Glory Be on for size. My favourites were always Trixie Belden (who A Mighty Girl seems to have overlooked! No!) and Nancy Drew books. I’ve always loved a mystery!

Well, Trixie springs to mind immediately. Also, Meg.
My little girl is crushing on Pearlie right now but I can’t wait till she’s just a little older and I can introduce her to all those fab books.

Aah, Trixie always made me so glad to be curious. I loved her, and am pretty sure Bell’s on the same track. x

I’m so happy to see Matilda on that list – I think that’s my favourite book ever!

How about some Australian girls? Norah Linton of the Billabong series, Audrey of the Outback for the younger set, and Nim of Nim’s Island.

Trixie Belden is awesome, I always buy a Trixie book if I find one in a second hand shop. My daughter is a big fan of Matilda.
