We went to the Taronga Zoo Friends Christmas party last night and it was fabulous. Bart and I have been Zoo Friends for about 15 years (when in-country, of course) and the kids have practically grown up there.
We packed a picnic (the zoo food exhibit is a very sad exhibit indeed) and set off at about 5 o’clock. There was a secret thrill to walking INTO the zoo while the announcer was saying “the zoo is closing, please make your way to your nearest exit”. What a rush! (I don’t get out much.)
It was such a beautiful evening and the light was glorious. I took about 3000 photos (probably more). It’s taking everything I’ve got not to inundate you with photos.
I’m sorry – everything I’ve got was not enough.
I could have watched the elephants taking a dip for hours (and pretty much did!).
The best thing about after-hours zoo trip is there are no crowds whatsoever. So you get to do all the stuff you usually have to watch other kids get to do.
Santa made an appearance and all the staff were well into the festive spirit. There was hair spraying and face painting but we steered the kids away from that – it was a late enough night already without adding in an extended bath and hair wash session! Am I mean?
Twilight is just the right time of day to see the animals…
… and a city touched by magic from the cable car.
Hamming it up in Max’s hat (and he will kill me when he sees this shot on the blog – if you don’t hear from me for a while you’ll know it was the faux-Hipster that did me in).
Do you adore the zoo like me?
