I’ve spent the last year or so getting ready for home-based school holidays and it’s really paying off. I enjoyed these school hols more than any other.
Here’s how the holidays roll at our place:
1. Them
I let the kids do their own thing about 60% of the time. If they get bored, I tell them that only boring people are bored and they quickly race off to find something to do because at our house they know what being boring is the worst thing ever.
2. Us
I’m ready with my lists of top things to do when I want to get involved in finding them something to do:
25 ways for kids to hunt and gather
25 quieter pursuits for busy kids
25 things to play outside at home
25 rainy day things for kids to do
25 ways for kids to get messy
3. Out
We do just one ‘special’ activity a week – these hols we went to the city each week, roaming the botanical gardens in week one and taking ferry rides week two. Both freebies, I might add. Check out this post for loads more ideas: 13 really nice (mostly free) days out with the kids.
Here are my girls loving the ferry:
Other things that had me this week:
Reading – Jamie’s Comfort Food. I can’t get enough.
Writing – my blog roll. I missed it so – every blog needs a blog roll.Well, mine is back… look it up via ‘Blog Life / Daily(ish) reads”
Making – Oobleck with the girls, I am a sucker for punishment…
Wishing – the spring blossoms lasted for longer, our garden is especially wonderful this time of year.
Loving – Bren at 13 Acres.
Wondering – why I can’t stop nibbling, although I am getting so much better at managing it.
Enjoy the long weekend and back to school on Tuesday (is that just NSW?). Here we go with the lunch boxes…
Happy reading.

SMOKIN’ new digs!! Love it. But I’m afraid I’ll end up going to spam… WP doesn’t like me… I guess I’ll have to make the move soon too! Haha!
Love that you let your kids mostly entertain themselves on holidays. Brilliant. Off to check out your blog roll! x

I’m glad your Blog Roll is back! I enjoy it myself and used to hop off to visit your recommended reads. I somehow found it again yesterday, thank goodness! I know I could add some more to my own, but then it would get really, really long so I’m glad you form ‘the other half’!! Enjoying the new look, it’s all working out really well.
Have shared a funny post today – funny/scary – had some freesias in a glass vase to take a picture of and the last thing I expected to see was a thin wisp of smoke…
Maxabella says
Who knew that a bunch of freesias in a glass jar was the essential kit for going on Survivor??? x

I just love the holidays and will be cramming as much as I can into the weekend too. It means blogging takes even more of a backseat…for a week or two.
Mother Down Under says
Jamie’s Instagram feed has been amazing…so much comfort food!
And I agree about spring…I miss the jasmine already.
Enjoy the last few days of school holidays!
Maxabella says
Our jasmine is still blooming, but not for long. The smell of spring is just divine. We have been going for an evening walk after dinner just to take in the scent of our neighbours’ gardens. So delicious! x

Love your blog roll and the intro you give for them also… Happy long weekend enjoy the sun x

You too. The weather in Sydney has been gorgeous. We are all loving the lazy garden days so much. x

.. Happy long weekend enjoy the sun x thanks for the weekend read

I made sure to ‘unspam’ you for future hellos, Sarah. I don’t know why WP does that to so many. x

How beautiful has this holiday been?! I was just saying today that it’s been such a lovely relaxed break around here. Spring is my absolute most favourite time of year, and we’ve been enjoying it at the beach a lot.
Bron, your blog roll is like a mini library! I’m working on mine in an unconventional form, just need to get it sorted.
Enjoy the long weekend hun, and yes we go back on Tuesday here in Queensland too. xx
Maxabella says
The weather in Sydney has been glorious. Makes me wonder why I insist that Autumn is my fave season when SPRING is clearly the loveliest! x
Jo @Countrylifeexperiment says
Thanks for hosting Bron! I’ve been meaning to buy comfort food for CB… Off to book depository I go!

I really love it. I’ve kinda always had a bit of a food crush on Jamie – we lived in the UK when he first hit the tele and he was the cutest little dude with such natural passion for good. He’s gone on to prove that he’s not just a charming face, he really lives and breathes what he preaches. That plus I am dead jealous of his home. Cor! x
Kate @ From Katie to Kate says
Bron, I am stealing your ‘only boring people are bored’ line to try out here. It seems to be that the ‘Im bored’ phrase is just the latest thing to say around here! But, understandably. Who in their right mind puts their house up for sale in the middle weekend of the holidays? Who? Why me! But luckily, it sold. And between you and me, I could not have survived week two of the holiday if we had to open again…
Maxabella says
It sold! Yaaaay! Risky, but now completely worth it. You will need a holiday after these ‘holidays’! x
Trudie @ My Vintage Childhood says
I feel ya about the home based holidays. The kids came up with the most delightful list of holiday wants, it was all the most simplest of things like arts and crafts, climbing a tree, going to the park, beachcombing, op shopping. I have such cool kids, love them so much.
P.S – I can never get enough of Jamie Oliver, I’m a hardcore fan.
Maxabella says
Your kids really are so cool, Trudie. Maybe has a small something to do with their mother… x

Sounds like you have had a great holidays, Bron! I am already looking forward to the big six week break (I’m a teacher, can you tell?). I will definitely be raiding your list of freebies too.

I’m amazing myself right now because I’m feeling exactly the same way!! x
