We had a shaky start to term 4 – we generally have shaky ‘starts’ at anything around here. Despite my best efforts, so far my kids could not be called ‘resilient’ by any stretch of the imagination. Which is a great shame as I think that’s one of our jobs as parents – to raise resilient people who can tackle what life throws at them.
Never mind, we have time (she says optimistically).
I had Cappers at home on the first day back at school with a bad cold and the mysterious ‘sore tummy’ (ST) that has plagued her for weeks (you can see in the image above just how much that ST is holding her back). I have been essentially ignoring the ST because it generally seems to flare up right at bedtime or when she has something big on in her life. It didn’t take a genius parent (thank goodness) to figure out that it was probably a psychosomatic symptom of anxiety and have been reasonably sympathetic but resoundingly dismissive.
Well, our doctor thinks she may have picked up a parasite of some description during our idyllic holiday to Fiji. So, maybe not so idyllic after all… especially when I found myself collecting ‘stool’ samples late on Tuesday night. Yep, that disgusting image of me smeared in poo you now have in your head has been plaguing my dreams ever since. Parenting, huh?
Anyway, throw a Max plantar wart into the mix (picture James Brown and the cape routine – see below- and you get the idea of just how painful this experience was for our poor, brave Max – not to mention the entire family) and we’ve had ourselves quite the week. He had the plantar wart iced at the doctors on Wednesday (note, two visits to the doctor in two days) and has been dragging himself around on his tummy ever since, as if they iced the entire foot and we left it back at the surgery. Oh, he loves a dramatic moment does our Max.
Other things that had me this week:
Reading – The Artist’s Way for Parents: such a gentle read, it calmed me down enough to deal with James Brown without fuss.
Writing – accidentally inflammatory Facebook posts… It’s nice to have balls, but when will I learn to throw them gently? When?
Making – up my mind about the renovation. I have a Pinterest bathroom board going and a kitchen board going and I’m finding my style THIS WEEK or the whole thing is off. I mean it. This time. Really.
Wishing – my kids were more resilient. Or I was. Or something.
Loving – so, so much when someone makes their dream happen. Goosebumps when I saw this.
Wondering – what my own dream is. Or perhaps, quietly and without fuss, I’m living it already.
Enjoy your weekend. We’ll be out in the garden – I can’t get enough of this spring weather! Oh, look, the thunderclouds are rolling in as I write this… yep, it’s been that kind of week. I’m just hoping that Max is right: do the boring bits make the other bits even better? I really, really hope so!
Happy reading.

Lucy @ Bake Play Smile says
Oooh I like the sound of your Pinterest inspiration boards… my problem is I pin so much stuff I totally forget what I was there for!!! Have a great weekend xx
Maxabella says
Me too, Lucy – DAYS can go by when I’m pinning. It’s lovely there. x
Emily says
Poor kiddlywinks! And poor you. Watching the gymnastics display, I can see why you were a little less than concerned about the tummy pains!
Maxabella says
It was not a pleasant week all round, but hey, we’re all good! x
Malinda @mybrownpaperpackages says
The boring bits definitely make the other bits better!
Maxabella says
He’s a smart little cookie my Max. He has a way of seeing the world that makes me want to fly. x
Sarah Mac says
Max is absolutely right – the boring bits DO make the other bits even better!
Maxabella says
Don’t they? I will try to remember this when next I’m doing my invoicing… that’s definitely a boring bit that makes things better! x
Bec @ Seeing the Lighter Side of Parenting says
Oh lord, yep, I’ve done the kiddie stool sample collection before. I feel for you: I couldn’t eat for the rest of the day:(
Maxabella says
Oh Bec, it’s awful, just awful! I could never be a doctor and DEFINITELY never be a pathologist! I guess they just get used to it, but still!! x
Melissa {Suger} says
What a week. Here’s to a healthy continuation of the term. Haha. Linking up for the first time in ages and looking forward to popping around to some of the other blogs on Sunday!
Maxabella says
Well it’s just a joy to see you, Suger. I can’t stop thinking about how awesome you are with your charm and wit. x
Kelly Exeter says
Loling all the lols at ‘It’s nice to have balls, but when will I learn to throw them gently? When?’
Please never change B
Maxabella says
Thought you’d like that one, Kel. 🙂
Nicole - seeking Victory says
Max sounds hilarious. Poor fella. I kinda hope for Cappers’ sake it is a parasite. A bit easier to treat than anxiety. I’ve heard of a few of these cases lately.
Maxabella says
I do too, Nicole. x
Cath says
Just loving this because… I think I had the realisation that I was living my dream this week too. Not sure which dream it was, but I think it all turns out OK in the end! After some of the adventures I’ve had, that’s kinda nice in itself!
PS. Good to see some inflammatory debate on the blogosphere this week. We need to keep talking and sharing and being our crazy selves if we’re ever going to change this world!!!
Maxabella says
Amen to both your comments, Cath. Cheers to quite dreams that sneak up on us and loud talk that shakes us up a bit. x
Jody says
Gosh that part about Max’s foot made me laugh! Hope they’re all on the mend soon. xx
Maxabella says
He told me just tonight that he was starting to be “able to feel my foot again.” I’ll take that as good news!! x
Zanni Louise says
I just caught the end of your “inflammatory post” thread. I never have the balls to express opinions like that. I admire your ability to spark conversation. And passion! Here’s to resilience. I wish my kids had a bit more of it too. x
Maxabella says
Well, Zanni, no matter their level of passion, I think people’s general niceness stops them from being ballsy and that’s a very good thing indeed. x
Kylie Purtell - A Study in Contradictions says
I have my first two ever photography jobs booked for this weekend so right now I am just quietly shitting myself and praying and hoping and crossing everything that I don’t fuck anything up! I don’t think I’m gonna be able to relax until I get home on Sunday night and go through all of the images and see if I have anything that’s usable. Scary and exciting all at once!
Maxabella says
How wonderful, Kylie! And so you that it’s TWO, not just one. Best wishes, not that you need them. Believe and do, dear lady, believe and then do. x
Lisa@RandomActsOfZen says
Well, you have had quite the week! Hope your possums are on the mend.
Seeing dreams come true is just magical, isn’t it? xx
Maxabella says
It really, truly is, Lisa. Cherries deserves all the success that I know is coming her way and more. x
Mother Down Under says
I was just thinking to myself about how when I was little I thought being a grown up was so glamourous…and while it does have its perks (I just ate a few spoonfuls of leftover chocolate frosting that I have hidden in the fridge) there are definitely sides to being a grown up and a parent that are decidedly not glamourous.
And I appreciate your blogging insights…and honesty.
Maxabella says
See, I read “chocolate frosting” but all I see is poo. I’m ruined!!! And, on the honesty note, I’m starting to wonder if that old adage is still true: is honesty really still the best policy? I’m starting to think that working good PR is the new best policy… x
Bec @ The Plumbette says
Love your work Bron. What a week. I had a plantar wart on my foot and it took freaking ages to get rid of it – going to the doctor every week to get it frozen out to burn it to the core.
And Poo samples? Eww. I hope the ST is fixed though. x
Maxabella says
It’s really weird ‘cos we deal with the baby poo for years (you will be right in there right now), but the big kid poos… that’s a whole new thing! I’m ok, though, I’m working through it… Ha ha. x
ClaireyHewitt says
Party season is beginning at our place, it’s the time Pinterest and I become best friends. I also have the cake outsourced for the first party already. Feeling smug, but really the cake is the least of my party planning problems.
Maxabella says
Yep, I’m moving into Capper’s party mode belatedly too. Always, always I leave her’s until the last minute. October kills me. x
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
All I have to say is BIG HUGS!!!!!!!!!!
But it has also been quite interesting in regards to certain personalities.
You are a good egg. Always will be. Enough said.
Em xx
Maxabella says
Thank you sweetness. You are one of the keepers for sure. x
Kathy says
Lovely post Bron – I’m with you on the resilience and I think you are modelling it really well – when you have a ‘less than perfect’ week (is there any other kind?), it’s great to be able to reflect on the highs and lows, or just reflect. Take a deep breath and next week you’ll have those renos sorted.
Maxabella says
Pathetic tough weeks have always just made me smile – life is so, so random. x
Raychael aka Mystery Case says
I would blame the full moon for any and all inflammatory FB status updates this week but who knows what that might start. 😉
I’ve just had an entire week social media free, not feeling as relaxed as I should but that has everything to do with deciding to tackle my blog merge in my time off. It’s amazing how much you can achieve (even if it did go a tad pear shaped) when there is no social media to distract you.
Have a great weekend. We are attempting camping for the first time in six years, annoyingly not the glamping five star I’ve become accustomed to.
Maxabella says
Oooooh camping – hats off to you! A cabin is as far as we’ve ever managed. Part of me wants to go for the kids to experience it while they are young, another part of me notices how many years have gone by since I first started saying that!! I will check out your newly-minted blog merge! x
Mrs W says
Oh, one of THOSE weeks. Don’t worry, I believe they come around every once in a while but then when it’s over, hopefully you’ve done your penance for the time being! Hope the ST and wart are out of your lives soon!
Maxabella says
Gosh I hope so, I just can’t do another week like this one! x
Jodi Gibson (JF Gibson Writer) says
Ups and downs, all part of the game. Hope your weekend has more ups though. Up and up and up!!!
Maxabella says
Thanks lovely, you too! And your post today couldn’t have been better timed for me.. 🙂
Seana Smith says
Well, let’s hope that next week is very, very quiet… as I said to a friend of mine recently whose son has been very very unwell ‘boring is very good at our house.’
I’m going to link a post I just wrote as it’s unusually heartfelt for me… the weekends are so busy when Paul is away that I rarely read or write at all… but just had to today and now I must drag us all out into glorious sunshine and will do some reading around at night time.
Maxabella says
Large doses of sunshine needed! x
Sonia Life Love Hiccups says
Oh hun – it has been quite the week for you. Enjoy this gorgeous weather in the garden lovely girl and go nuts with the Pinterest therapy… you’ve earned a good rest xx
Annaleis says
Getting stool samples is one of those jobs us parents just have to do aren’t they? I hope both kids have better weeks this week. We go back to school on Tuesday and the headaches started this morning.
Sonia from Sonia Styling says
I’m so loving a bit of Pinterest browsing on the iPad of an evening. Such a lovely way to relax.
Maxabella says
It’s like shopping without the credit card horror!! x
