I had a big expanse of wall above the fireplace that I wanted to make look Christmassy. I usually put a wreath up there, but this year I decided to try making a giant pennant with a Christmas message that is really resonating with me this year.
It turned out to be so easy (took me less than an hour) that I’m sharing it with you, just in case you want to make your own giant Christmas pennant. Of course, you can put anything you like on your pennant so you may not want to make it Christmassy at all…
What you need
- Fabric – linen (which I have used) or thick cotton or calico
- Thread and a sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
- Fabric paint – I’ve gone with a metallic copper colour
- Paint brushes
- A length of dowel that is longer than the width of your pennant (you could also use a stick)
- Thick string or cord or ribbon to hang.
What you need to do
- Cut your fabric into a rectangle that is 3 cm wider and 8 cm longer than the finished size you want.
- Fold and iron your fabric to make a 1.5 cm hem both sides, pin.
- Fold your fabric in half and fold the bottom into an even triangular shape. Iron the triangle flat and pin.
- Fold the top of your fabric down to make space for the dowel to thread through and iron then pin.
- Sew straight down either side about 1 cm in to hem and then around the triangular bottom.
- Sew straight across the top, leaving the loop for the dowel to be threaded through later.
- Sketch out your design on a piece of paper and then paint onto the fabric. You may like to use chalk to lightly draw straight onto the fabric, rubbing the chalk away as you paint. Keep your design quite free-flowing to allow for error!
- Once paint is completely dry, thread the dowel through the top loop and attach the string.
Hang and enjoy.
What do you think your Christmas message is this year?

I think my message would be something to do with peace. Peace in our families and homes, peace on Earth x

The message we all need this year, Kez. x

Oh Bron, I adore this! You are such a clever cookie. I think this year’s Christmas message is from the exact Christmas carol you based your pennant on…
“Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.”

My favourite carol, Son. x

What a great and stylish idea! I’d love to try this (if only my handwriting was as neat as yours…) 🙂

You could trace over a font with chalk? x

Love the pendant. I’d reiterate the wish and hope for peace. I think I always would, but particularly after events this week. We need peace and love and light more than ever.
Maxabella says
Peace on earth and mercy mild. x
