Instead of screens today… why not bake some biscuits?
Kids love baking and I get that baking with them is often not the most fun a mum ever had, but the mess and the angst is worth it, I promise.
If your kids are younger, give them some little jobs to do while you get on with baking the bickies. They’ll love having their own bowl filled with flour to fluff and ooze their hands through (outside is generally a good idea for this bit). While you’re at it, you should try fluffing the flour yourself as it feels amazing. Anyway, let them put together their own mini bowl of biscuit batter and put it in the oven for them alongside your own batch. No harm done, it’s all edible!
If your kids are midling, they might be ready to bake their own biscuits, but you may still have to do the measuring for them.
If your kids are older, go through the recipe with them, help them find the ingredients (and measure if necessary) and leave them to it. They can let you know when their biscuits are ready to go into the oven.
Here are some of our favourite biscuit recipes
- Gingerbread smilies
- Muesli cookies
- Choc chip heaven
- Coconut macaroons (just 2 ingredients so perfect for beginners!)
- Honey jumbles
- South African health rusks

A big YES to those choc chip tasties, Bron!
We’re baking green choc chip blondies tonight for St. Pat’s Day celebrations at school tomorrow, and Bell’s a little bit excited that the principal is going to try them. Fingers crossed no eggshells sneak in x

That’s so cool – I wish our school did St Paddy’s day, but alas, crickets! You’ve reminded me to at least pop a gold coin into the lunch bags with a note about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, or SOMETHING, in for tomorrow. Thanks Lisa. z

I think I’m the only one that has issues with screen time in the house. My three girls (14, 15 and just about to turn 17) are all into books. I may need to ban books for a weekend and reintroduce baking.

This is good news, Raych, ‘cos then you’re the only one you have to wean off! That’s very cool that your girls are all readers. The best girls always are… 🙂 x

There’s nothing like baking for quality time together 🙂
I let the Little Mister (3) pour each ingredient into the mixing bowl once I’ve measured it. He gets to stir and if it’s biscuits or cookies, he gets to make them into shapes to put on the baking tray. We’ve been baking together since forever. He loves it so much he asked for a play kitchen for his last birthday. I can’t wait to teach him how to cook simple meals (not just for my own benefit haha) and give him those life skills. Cooking is great for everything – even teaching maths and science!
It can be a little annoying if I want to bake alone but I can’t fault his enthusiasm 🙂

I’m picturing the most beautiful scene right now, Kez. You and the little fella, making dinner together. So gorgeous. x

I’m loving all your screen free tips, but this is my far and away favourite! x

You strike me as a biscuit baker from way back, Sammie. x
