When we’re busy, we need to pause more than ever. We need to treat ourselves even when there are a million things to do. Even when we feel like if we stop it’s all going to unravel and tangle in one of those giant knots that you can’t even get out with your teeth. Even then, we need to put it all down. There is magic every day if we just stop for a minute to look for it.
You can make any day of the year a day for spoiling yourself, for lifting your spirits, for change. You just need to decide that today is the day and push your usual routine to the side. It can all wait.
I am the kind of person who finds that difficult. I say to myself, “I’ll rest when it’s all done”.
One day my husband quietly said to me, “honey, it’s never all done.”
It never will be all done.
Here are 10 lovely things you can do for yourself today. Right now. Go on.
There is just something about producing your own bread that makes everything all right. The warmth, the rhythm, the smell of all the childhoods in the world. If you’ve never done it before, today is the day. It’s easier than you think… well, Bele makes it look easier anyway!
Flowers make you happy – everybody knows that. What everybody doesn’t know is just how easy it is to make your own paper flowers. It will cheer you up for days! Click here for the how-to.
A couple of years ago, Kelly shared a rule that changed her life… and it’s kinda changed mine too. At my place we have a philosophy, “just do it, and it’s done”. In other words, all those things that we procrastinate about because we don’t want to do them because they are horrible or boring, well they will eat us alive if we don’t just do them. The not doing is far worse than the doing…
You could actually choose any recipe by Sophie and it will make your day a lovely day. The baking and particularly the eating. Treat yourself to something extra yummy and serve it up with loads of ice cream.
One of the best things you can do to treat yourself is to stop for long enough to plan. Life gets on top of me all the time, but there is a way to feel back in control. Starting today, I’m getting back to planning things more. Taking five minutes to plan will save me 5 hours a week, easily! You can find loads of tips to help you get there in my ‘fitting it all in’ series.
Now, now, now hear me out… whether it’s a budget or decluttering a room or fixing an ongoing problem, sometimes the best thing we can do to cheer ourselves up is take action. Doing something towards something else really does make you feel good. Life is a lot more stressful when you feel like it’s out of control. Make a plan to start fixing something that’s broken in your life and take action today.
Where is the time left in the week to look after all the little bits that make up a modern woman, I ask? Right now my legs are so hairy that my six-year-old wants to cuddle them at night. Of course, taking care of ourselves is not just about grooming. It’s also about our everyday approach to our health and wellbeing. I need to read this post and get my act together ‘cos, you know, I matter.
I always say, “when things don’t go right, go outside”. Swoop up the makings for lunch or dinner, grab a rug and hit the road. Every meal taste better outside and every child behaves better too. Lie down, close your eyes and relaaaaaax.
Soothe everyone to sleep with a favourite story. Tuck yourselves in and remember to talk about the book you’re reading. Your children are a beautiful reminder that the weight of routine and doing is all worthwhile.
Let’s face it, if you’re feeling schlumpy and generally disinterested in your life, something’s gotta change. You can’t keep plowing along and expect things to get better if you’re not prepared to sow a new crop as you go. Change means letting go of something else and that’s the bit I struggle with sometimes. Here’s where we can hopefully find our motivation to get things moving.
Happy day to you!
What do you do to spoil yourself daily?
