My girls still love playing with their teddy bears. It warms the cockles, I tells ya. When I was a kid I had a teddy bear called Bill that I just adored. When I was about 10 I felt like I was too old to play with babyish teddy bears and I gave Bill to Vinnies. I have missed him ever since.
There are two things to note about this memory. First of all, I was probably more like 14 and in Year 8 in high school when I finally released my hold on that bear. And secondly, I’m pretty sure Mum gave Bill to the Rubbish Tip, not Vinnies because, let’s face it, I’d had that beloved bear for a very, very long time. In teddy bear years, Bill was probably about 175.
I know some parents freak out when their kids still cling to childish things like teddy bears or lovies, but I’m an embracer. I get it, kids. I hope my kids keep cuddling their favourites for as long as they need. If it wasn’t for meeting Bart, I doubt I would ever have gotten over the loss of Bill. I’m barely even kidding.
The girls announced that it was Beverly Bear’s birthday and they wanted to treat their gang to a Teddy Bears’ Picnic — because Teddy Bears’ Picnics are a thing, right? SO much of what we do in life is due to popular culture. Never underestimate the power of the media on impressionable young minds (or Jimmy Kennedy for that mater).
Throughout the week, the girls went to all kinds of trouble creating paper food and making happy little light box signs. There was even a cake made from sorbet containers, a pencil sharpener and chopsticks. Genius! Then, of course, it rained. It bloody bucketed down this weekend and I couldn’t cope with the little faces.
“Who said picnics have to be outside,” I enthused. “Let’s just set it up right here!”
And so they did.
Do your kids enjoy treating their bears?
Let’s play!

This is adorable. This is the kind of picnic I would love to be invited to… And you know I’m not joking 🙂
