As much as I love making decoratey things, after a while the repetition of making lots and lots of the same thing really starts to grate. Like the 150 cake-toppers I made for the upcoming Kindy Welcome Lunch. I could never be an industry.
Perhaps part of my hohummedness (newly minted adjective there!) is the fact that while I do have a child in Year One and am therefore rightfully welcoming the new Kinder parents to school life ย (as is our school’s tradition), I am also a Kinder Mum myself so I am technically going to all this trouble to welcome myself.
The things we do.
Do you get involved in this sort of stuff at the school? Do you enjoy it or do you do it because you feel obligated? Would you make 150 kite-themed cake toppers just for fun?
Joining in with the inspirational Kootoyoo’s My Creative Space today… one of my favourite things to do in the whole blogiverse. Thanks Kirsty.

Those toppers are gorgeous! What a lovely school to organise such a special welcome for the newbies and what a lovely gal you are to devote so much time to making it look pretty. 150 is mammoth! I would like to think that one day I’ll be the kind of Mama to help out with the school community stuff… but I’ve got a couple of years to work on my creativity! ;o)

I agree those toppers are gorgeous! And yes, I probably would make 150 cake toppers to welcome myself…did you see how many xmas decorations and choc freckles I made for the school fete?? sigh…the things we do indeed ๐

Yes I have done similar things in the past..it was fun because I believed it was worthwhile. I loved working with a group of other mums to do stuff for school too. Could I do it for a living?..No..I would only like to create on my own terms for money..one off pieces only.

Fantastic effort there.!
In answer to your question, unlike all the school spirited Mum’s here, I probably wouldn’t go to so much effort.
I would like to, in fact I aim to be one of those awesome Mum’s that can make cool things, but I am hopeless, and tend to just avoid trying. Haha.

The cake toppers are gorgeous.
Yes must say that, I am a volunteer at my boys school. I do enjoy it and I enjoy watching what my boys are upto in the class room. They are also proud to have mum around.

wow, fantastic! i love the toppers! I would agree to help someone else do 150 toppers but would never take on the job single handedly…!
I do not have kids at school age yet though so who knows what the future holds?!

Yes. I’d do it for fun. If I knew how to make them. I love to make things and love a reason to make them. Damn you, though, you’ve given me an idea! (I didn’t say I had TIME to make things….)

The first 50 would be enjoyable…then after that, boredom would kick in and the cake toppers would start to get sloppy. Saying all that I too would make 150 of them to welcome myself ๐
Will pop over and take a look at Kootoyoo’s creative space now xoxox

wow they look fabulous! And 150 is very impressive!!!
I sure wouldn’t do it for fun, because I’m terrible at cutting straight but I sure would appreciate them if they were welcoming me! xo

Er, no, no and NO.

I’ve found myself in similar situations, but I do it (grumbling all the while…) for the perverse pleasure I get when people give me the “You’re so creative!/I don’t know how you do it!” shpiel. Sick, huh?
Michelle says
Those toppers look fantastic, I feel your pain I made about 12 once for V Day to stick into muffins and that took me forever! Your a dedicated Mum x

Great job on those toppers! Us teachers love moms like you!! ๐

I love paper crafting! I have a…scarey amount of paper in this house. Pretty paper, that i don’t want to touch because it’s so pretty. Stupid huh?
Asfor volunteering for those kind of jobs? Yep, i do it. Yes, because i enjoy it, but also because i feel like i need to. I’m a SAHM, it’s unfair for those sorts of jobs to rest on the working parents because the SAHM’s “can’t be bothered”, and i like being involved with my children’s education, and thus school as much as possible.
And those toppers look FANTASTIC. Great work!

Wowzers! They look awesome…but 150!!
I’m not too sure if I would for school, maybe. I did sew a bloody gazillion meters of Daylesford Organics twill tape last week and that nearly killed me. I do love those kites.
