Some days you’ve gotta laugh or you’d cry. I like to do both at the same time.
All week I’ve been mental at work. I’m making approximately fifty five decisions an hour and everyone wants a piece of me. Just so busy that my head spins. I’m getting through it on a carefully planned schedule and good old fashioned humour. So, don’t fret, I’m okay.
But this morning my work crisis went straight out the window.
The Badoo’s usual Friday routine is that LOML drops her off on his way to work in the city (“Dad”, as she calls him, never “Daddy” or “Dadda” as the older Tsunamis do) while I do the school run because I work from home on Fridays, but today we only had one car, so it was me.
On the school run she seemed a little quiet, she complained of a sore tummy. No, she didn’t want to go to the toilet, no she wasn’t feeling sick. She wasn’t hot, she wasn’t miserable, just ‘sore’. So I decided to drive her over to Nonno’s on schedule and maybe I’d still make my 9 o’clock meeting.
By the time we arrived, she was miserable and crying from the pain. She indicated that she was ‘really, really sore’ lower in her abdomen. I freaked out (as you do). I thought ‘something she ate’, I thought UTI’.
I really thought ‘appendectomy’.
I gave her a hit of Panadol to help quell the pain and drove her to the medical centre. I made calls on the hands free all the way there to rearrange my busy working day. Little Badoo was crying out how much it hurt by this stage and I thought ‘maybe they’ll see her first since she’s so little’.
I really thought ‘Emergency, stat’.
By this stage, everyone in the waiting room was freting for this poor child who was obviously in incredible pain. I had already mentally rearranged the next week of my life ready for the hospital stay. A number of kind people came over to us to say that the Badoo could take their place if they were up next. I was beside myself with worry over my darling little Badoo who was by now a huddled, cuddled mess in my lap. Then she sobbed, “I need the toilet”.
I raced her to the toilet, ready for the projectile vomit of blood and almost in tears because I should have taken her directly to the Emergency department for her apendectomy requiring a week’s stay at the hospital.
Then she weed. And weed. And weed. And, dear god, weed some more.
When she had finished pissing Niagra Falls, she said, “I’m all better now.” And smiled. And skipped back to the waiting room where the doctor came out immediately and called “The Badoo”. Of course she did.
Surprisingly, there is no treatment necessary for a child needing to do a wee. The doctor humoured me by performing a tummy squeeze here and there, but with the Badoo singing nursery rhymes at the top of her voice and giggling because the doctor was ‘ticking me’, we both knew there wasn’t really a whole lot to say.
So, this week I’m grateful for…
130. The laughing cry – those silly moments when life is just so superbly sweet and sour all at the same time that as much as you want to cry, you simply have to laugh.
131. The crying laugh – when you are laughing so hard that the tears are streaming and your laugh rattles your bones. My favourite kind of laugh.
132. Any old laugh – the more then merrier. How else are we ever going to get through it?
So, what’s making you smile today? Add your I’m Grateful For post to the list below (and please, we love you, but it really does matter that your post is a Grateful one and not just a random), add the button (grab the code from my sidebar and paste it into your post) andpretty-please add a link back to me. Oh dear, that’s a funny story but poor you and poor wee badoo. I laughed out loud, laughter tinged with relief, very apt. Made the boys behind me who are watching the rugby league match jump!

Love it. What an adventurous morning for you both! Parenthood throws us so many highs and lows sometimes you just have to laugh 🙂

Good to hear that the Badoo is okay. Must of been a stressful morning.
Miss Pink says
This post! Oh gosh this post made me laugh. A much needed laugh!
I was waiting for you to say she did a really big fart or something, but this was just as good!
Glad she’s ok and that it was a quick fix. Lol.
Felicity says
Nice one Seana ‘poor wee Badoo’ indeed.
So pleased that you could put this post on your Grateful list Bella – a happy day indeed.
In our family we love making our Mum laugh because it’s infectious.
When this happens anyone walking into the room would see people with contorted faces, tears rolling down their cheeks, shoulders shaking and not a lot of sound coming out – the silent laugh is a winner for me even though from the outside it closely resembles sobbing. xx F

…sometimes when I laugh I look like i’m crying…my sisters call it the laugh cry face! 🙂

I think it was one of those weeks! I managed to laugh off most things that made me want to cry throughout the week, but today I ended up a sobbing mess in a previous boss’s office. Mortifying!
Funny little Badoo. Can’t believe it turned out that she just needed a wee!
Kellie says
I have tears streaming down my face. That is just priceless! Oh my goodness….. 🙂
Suz @ Segovia and The I Love You Song says
Great story. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to wee! 🙂 x

I’m glad it was such a simple fix!
Jodie Ansted says
Oh, dear!
You know, my 7yo used to often complain about a sore tummy and I ended up realising it was because he was holding on to his wee. Little bugger.
But I did have a few nights where the 4yo would wake with sharp pains in his tummy, and I even drove him to Emergency early one morning convinced he had appendicitis! It wasn’t. Probably a bug.
Have a lovely – restful – weekend. (After Sat sport, that is.)

Oh my! That’s funny! We’ve been experiencing a similar thing in our house. Miss Flea has had terrible pain in her tummy. So much so she barely slept more than 30 mins at a time the other weekend. Why? Constipation! Couldn’t understand why she was like this since she was still doing “number 2’s” & eating enough fruit & veg to sink a ship, yet constipated she was. This afternoon she started the “I’ve got a pain in my tummy” routine. I said, “You need to do a poo.” Miss Flea says, “No I don’t” and the conversation keeps on going Yes you do, No I don’t. We finally get home & she announces “I need to do a poo.” … like, der! Pain gone. Laugh laugh … but it does make you want to cry sometimes with frustration!
Brenda @ Mira Narnie says
oooh what a story you will tell at her 21st!!! Off to the Emergency for THE biggest WEE!! I love it! I love that you laughed (and cried) and that she;s so little she had no idea was a kerfuffle she made and was singing with the doctors!!! happy weekend to you xx

oh my gosh – if it had not been for the title of this post I would have been very worried at the sound of the little Badoo’s pain. But I had a feeling a happy ending was coming. Thanks for the laugh, you are quite right, nothing like a good laugh!

What an amazing story and love the way you told it. I was freaking out right through reading it myself. You poor thing, those moments I believe age us at least a few years… OR add a couple of extra greys to the mane. So glad little Badoo was ok, it IS painful when you really need to wee!
I had laugh or you’d cry moment today, I’ve just posted about it. I seem to get myself into many situations like that.

Laughter has always gotten me through many times in my life.

What about those times where you laugh so hard you almost wee yourself! Am I the only one who does that?
That’s got to be good for the soul, no?!
Deb says
Oh that made me laugh so hard! My neighbour calls her self “Mrs-Worst-Case-Scenario” but your story really tops the lot. I’m so glad you wrote it down, it will be EXCELLENT amunition (bother I can’t spell it) for when she becomes a teenager, oh yes it will!!!!
Renee says
Brilliant! Hahahahahaha and I bet it was one of those A&E centres who charge hideous amounts too! Hahahaha oh that made me laugh so hard – thank you! I hate those moments though – the doctor looks at you and often says ‘Is this your first/only baby/child?’ as if you are a total loony inventing a mysterious ailment!
I love those crying laughs – my husband and I were lying in bed the other night reading through iphone autocorrect fails – we had tears streaming down our cheeks and could hardly breathe. So good for the soul and we slept like babies! Love!
Jane@flightplatformliving says
a wee!!!! ok so it was niagra falls but really, a wee!! ha ha i am laughing at your expense, i hope you dont mind thats just classic. xxx
Georgie says
So pleased this story had a happy ending! My laughing cry is quite disturbing. I turn into a great sobbing mess, literally changing from hysterical to blubbering. First time witnesses never know quite what to do. Although I do end up puffy and red faced, it’s a great feeling! gxo
Jane says
Oh, this made me smile. Sometimes all you need is a really good wee. Glad to hear your little one is all better xxx
Kymmie says
Oh, this is soooo funny! I’m so glad she didn’t have appendicitis or anything major, but oh, how my heart would have been in my throat. I had a sick boy yesterday too. He was ill, and because we were heading to the shops to spend our ‘birthday money’, I wanted to be sure. As soon as we arrived at the carpark, we hopped out and threw up. It was such great timing.
I suggested we go home after cleaning up the mess. But nope. We suddenly felt a whole heap better and ready to buy some new toys!
Laughing sure is the best medicine, and unfortunately, I’ve done more of the crying in the past few days. Hmm, must turn it back into smiles 😉 Thanks for a gorgeous post. xx
Joni Llanora says
I had an apendectomoy so I was worried while reading this. So whew! That must have ben stessful but I’m glad everything is OK with Badoo.
therhythmmethod says
How wonderful she’s OK. I love the way you tell this story. My heart would have been bursting out of my chest. This is why I am a SAHM – I don’t think I could handle all that circus work. All that dancing for a gigantic wee! You’ve gotta laugh .. and I am. Happy weekend. x
Posie Patchwork says
Oh yes, the busting wee, it can cause all sorts of agony, perfectly timed in peak hour traffic or highways where you can’t pull over anywhere.
You forgot the wet-my-pants-laugh, come on, most of us reading are mothers with questionable pelvic floors. I have the most amazing colleague – we know each other so well, we say “i have a great story, go to the toilet first, you’ll need to” then tears of laughter & cross legs occur. I got to giggle BIG time at her last week as she discovered a shock pregnancy, ooppss, love Posie

Yes, the laughing cry! I shared one of these with my mum this week, we were in hysterics & just couldn’t stop. It really is so good for the soul to have a good hard laugh til you cry..x
Caz Makepeace says
Oh My Gosh. This happened to us a couple of months ago as we were stuck on the train. I was terrified it was appendix as well and jumped off the next station to go to hospital. As we got off she asked to go to the toilet, howling in pain and then once finished, jumped up in perfect spirits. I was completely baffled. Now I know this can be a “normal” thing. It was really terrifying when she was wailing and screaming, she seemed ot be in soooo much pain.
