We’ve never had ‘professional’ family photographs taken, even of the Tsunamis. And definitely not of me. I even shied away from having a typical wedding photographer. I’m just so… shy… who me?… having my picture taken. I get stressed, or act the ham or my hair just threatens to take over the entire world. I just never look the way I think I look in my head. Reality check needed, anyone?
Anyway, you can imagine how nervous I was at the thought of snapper-extraordinaire (and soon to be famous given the love he is deservedly receiving in our blogging world) Tim Coulson coming over to our place yesterday to record our family ‘doing what we do’. You mean, like, reality? You want the ‘real’ us? Really?
Oh, why not? I suddenly thought. Why not?
So glad. So glad I just decided to go for it. Tim put me at ease within about 5 seconds of coming in our front door at 8am on Saturday. We were all in our jamies. The porridge was threatening to bubble over on the stove. I was baking disastrous-looking (but not bad-eating) cinnamon scrolls. In he came.
So glad. We spent the most terrific morning showing him around our place and then taking him to a little spot that we love to go to as often as possible. It was just so wonderful when he loved everything we love almost as much as us. Snap snap snap away he went and I wasn’t nervous or silly or hammy at all. I was just me. I have no idea what the majority of the photos look like yet, but I’m loving the sneak preview Tim has posted… and I will do a ‘big reveal’ post in the next couple of days to show you more of the good stuff.
So glad. Tim does a different sort of photography. He really does just capture a family doing what they do. No posed, awkward, matchy-match shots. Just ‘a day in the life’ stuff and a beautiful record of home and family life as we know it. It felt like a lovely morning with a lovely friend and I’m hoping that the resulting images capture the beauty of the day. Can’t wait to show you more.

Wow!! They look gorgeous.
We met our wedding photographer at a dance party in the bush. She was doing all the street press at the time. There is something so unnatural about posed, still pics of families with kids. I need to hunt down a phptographer in melb who does work like this.

The photo you have posted looks amazing with the girls in their pretty frocks and your beautiful house! I am heading over to see the previews..can’t wait ’til you share more. ..and oh yes…I always look different in the actual to what I have in my head!

I can’t wait to see the big reveal! Seriously! That picture, with all the natural light, your girls wearing pink is great! When I have a family, I think I would totally do professional family photographs! A great way to remember a year, a house, a place in time! 🙂

Just checked out the Maxabella family preview – Breathtaking. Beautiful.Your family and the photos. Every image somehow managed to be my favorite! I had a little peak around Tim’s page and his About Me page has clenched the deal (loved reading it). So I am guessing he does not travel as far as Margaret River BUT we have a family holiday booked for Sydney in October. I think this will be my must-do for the trip.
Seaside Siblings says
Beautiful!
I love having photo’s taken of my family, otherwise I wouldn’t have any photos with me in them! Lucky for me, I have a couple of amazing, talented friends who are photographers.
Felicity says
It sounds like Tim had as much fun with you as you did with him – no surprises there.
Can’t wait to see the next installment!

The photos are just beautiful Maxabella, you must be so very happy with them. What a wonderful idea to capture such natural shots. I’d love to let Tim loose on my little family.

Wonderful stuff! The photo of you and hubs is fab xx

This is a gorgeous shot, I hope they’re all this cute/light filled/spontaneous.
Like you, I’m always disappointed with pics of myself. My chin seems to disappear, I pull faces (accidentally) and I always look 5 kg heavier than I am. But I try to be in photos because I want to capture us – all of us – as we are.
Can’t wait for the big reveal!!
And thank you for sharing with us. x

But you have adorable kids, so that helps! I hope that you are over the moon with your first ever family photo xx
Catherine says
These photos are just gorgeous Bron. The colours and how natural they are. Sweet pics of your little girls:) My neighbour took some photos of the girls, posed but at home but otherwise no. I think professional photos have that wow factor that I can’t achieve. Thanks for sharing your family pics. xo

We have before. Pre-Greenie. Cost us an arm and a leg, it was in a studio, the make up just wasn’t me, the poses they got us to do were just…too posed? Don’t get me wrong they’re good but they’re just not us. I think that’s the problem sometimes.
Now i’ve scrapped all of that off of our walls and I opt for pictures i’ve taken. Good picture’s i’ve taken (with my DSLR). I try to keep them artsy, natural. Usually i find the best pictures are the one’s where i’m capturing the moment rather than a “look at the camera and smile” pose.
And your picture preview? Stunning! Just…no words, but the love and happiness in your household is captured completely.

these are gorgeous and just lost the better part of an hour pottering around on his blog and website and FB page. He is uber talented and I am sure will not be short of work from here on in. We all want to book him, This is what all prof shots should be like. Perfect!

Stunning Bron. Have just popped over to take at peek at the others and gasp….Tim is so very clever. Love your little Tsunamis and am looking forward to seeing the remainder of the photographs. Looks like a lovely way to spend your weekend.

I love that photo in your post! So cute! I am a big photo person but don’t really like to be in the photo! We had a disastrous experience with our Wedding Photographer but eventually 15 months after the big day got what we actually wanted out of him! We have had one lot of family photos done with Master N and I am on the hunt for a photographer, who just like Tim, will come and just be one of us (but with a camera) for a couple of hours.
I can’t wait to see the rest of the pics!
Have a great week!

Amazing photos, I look forward to seeing more. Your family is beautiful. Family photos are so important to have and cherish, a little snippet in time, captured forever now.
Mama of 2 boys says
Beautiful, natural, amazing shots Maxabella. We have never had any professional photos taken of the boys or as a family. It’s kind of not our thing, as much as I LOVE photos. I’m a bit like you, the professional thing scares me. We had a profesh wedding photographer, but even those managed to make me look silly in the majority of them. I’ll never forget when we went into the studio to choose the snaps for our album and the photographer says “you have some of the most hilarious facial expressions”. Great, thanks!
Look forward to seeing more of your delightful shots.

i could probably let a pro take pictures if he/she did them like that…i hate the posed matchy pictures that are so common in studios.

Those photos are just gorgeous!!! GORGEOUS! Sounds like just the kind of photographer I would like. I too shied away froma professional photographer at our wedding and just got some good friends who were good photographers to take snaps throughout the day. However, no matter how many times I told them I wanted lots and lots of the guests as well as us, they both took mostly of us and about one of each of the guests….. I went straight over to catch a glimpse of the face behind the name…. just a glimpse…. that’s enough for me. Just as I imagined.
So Now What? says
Second shoot I’ve seen by Tim now. Amazing! Never had any done. What if you’ve got a surly 11yo and a 4yo who DOES NOT SIT STILL? Still doable?
Here’s my link to the time we tried to get a family portrait for the parentals for Christmas of their 7 grandkids. Next time we hire a professional..

I’ve never had professional family photos taken (always on my to-do list though – and I’m a bit like you with not liking to be in photos but knowing it’s essential for posterity that I be there!)
Anyway am dipping my toes in teh water so to speak – I’ve finally booked in a photo session with someone to take photos of my kids in a natural setting while they play…that’s happeninmg at the end of next month. Then I may venture to a whole family session 🙂
Looking forward to seeing your family photos!
Tammi says
The sneak peek shots are stunning!!! I love natural unposed pics.
We’ve had a few sessions done of the kids over the years but never with us in them…though we really should capture our family as a whole someday.

Life In A Pink Fibro says
Wow! Love those shots. That one of the girls is gorgeous. And no, I don’t like having my photo taken. Hate it, in fact.
E. says
I hate having my photo taken. It’s a trait that Mr E and to a degree the kids also share. Which means we rarely have photos of us. But I have tried to get family porttraits doen every 3 or 4 years just to ensure we do have some.
I love the sneek peeks you have posted.
Laura says
Those are some lovely photos 🙂
I loathe having my picture taken but have had a few family shoots with my kids and now with our new baby – I battle to relax in front of the camera though :-/
Kellie says
I love natural shots. There’s nothing better. Can’t wait to see more! 🙂
Abby says
They are awesome! I love, love, love this style of photography, I don’t go for the posed shots either, and this is such a great way to really capture a family. They look fabulous 🙂 🙂 🙂
Kymmie says
If that one photograph is a taste of what’s on his sneak preview, I cannot wait! I love natural shots, I love a photographer that isn’t barking directions, and I love a la natueral.
Off to visit. And we’ve had some professional photos taken, but it’s been a while. I have nothing of our whole family with Noah. Sad. But I’m working on it.
Does Tim do Melbourne too?
Vanessa says
Gorgeous! I adore the one of your girls by your wonderful doors, and the one of ?you and your husband. You are exactly as I imagined – gorgeous. I hope you let him capture your face too?
We recently had photos from a friend who has just gone pro. Really love them and planning to have more in Spring.

We had engagement photos done and was well worth it. I’m hard to photograph but they did a good job. There are photos I like, and that doesn’t happen often.
