Instead of screens today, why not… make a couple of pot plant friends?
We recently spent a goodly amount of time making these gorgeous little pot plant friends to pretty up our front verandah. It’s such a simple (and cheap!) thing to make and it’s fun to change the faces or designs over time. Words are always easy to add and change – think inspirational quotes, power words (PEACE, JOY, LOVE, KINDNESS, BAM!) Make sure you water the pots very carefully, or your little friend will cry like that poor fellow in the picture above. Perhaps he knows he’s in danger of getting dropped for a new friend sometime soon?
What you need
- Paint smock or apron
- Newspaper or old towels
- Terracotta plant pots
- Chalkboard paint
- Paintbrush
- Potting mix
- Succulents
- Chalk
What you do
Paint the pots using the chalkboard paint. The stuff will get everywhere, so be sure to wear your smock or apron.
Remember, chalkboard paint is ‘real’ paint and doesn’t come off in water. Make sure you lay out some newspaper or old towels to catch the drips.
If it gets on skin, just leave it. The last thing you want to do is put turpentine on your child’s skin and the paint will wear off within a couple of baths. Skin is good like that. If you’re worried about your child, do a patch test for reactions prior to launching into the activity. If you have any doubts, this is not an activity for you!
You’ll most likely need to do a couple of coats of paint. Leave to completely dry overnight between coats.
Once your pots are painted and totally dry you can draw your face on them. If you don’t want to draw a face you can draw a pattern, a picture or some spots.
Cappers had her Beverley Bear draw a bear face. They are inseparable right now (don’t you love a kid and their very best softie! Tears me up!).
Once your faces are complete it’s time to add your potting mix and pot up your succulents. You’ll only need to buy one or two succulent plants because you can divide them. They strike so easily. You can also clip some from a friend’s patch and save yourself some cash.
Display your lovely pots somewhere sunny and remember to carefully water them every now and then. You can wash the chalk off with water and draw something (or someone) new whenever you fancy.
